153. Harnessing AI to Combat Cancer in Africa (PowerFM)
Wednesday Oct 02, 2024
Wednesday Oct 02, 2024
One of the most emotionally difficult interviews I have done. With Pabi Moloi on PowerFM Lunch.
Cancer continues to be one of the leading causes of mortality globally, including across Africa. According to the World Health Organisation, it is the second largest cause of death worldwide. As we observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, it's crucial to highlight that Africa's cancer burden is projected to triple by 2040, driven by late-stage diagnoses, limited access to treatment, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure. The need for improved cancer care across the continent has never been more urgent.

152. Public speaking: AI will not replace authenticity (PSASA)
Monday Sep 30, 2024
Monday Sep 30, 2024
My recent talk at the Professional Speakers Southern Africa virtual chapter meeting.
I shared my journey from being a nervous teenager, embarrassed by my first public speaking experience, to becoming a professional speaker, earning 90% of my income from it. I emphasised how authenticity is key in connecting with audiences and discussed how AI, especially ChatGPT, can help with generating ideas and improving articulation, but only if we use detailed prompts. AI can’t replace the genuine human voice. Through personal stories, like teaching my son the power of storytelling for his school presentation and reflecting on my own speaking experiences, I highlighted the importance of resilience and staying true to oneself. Ultimately, I encouraged speakers to use AI as a helpful tool, but to always remain authentic.

Monday Aug 26, 2024
Monday Aug 26, 2024
In the interview, I discussed South Africa's National AI Policy Framework, focusing on how it aims to develop AI ethically, in a way that aligns with our unique socio-economic context. I highlighted the importance of broad public input, even from those who may not be experts in AI, to ensure the policy reflects our specific challenges and priorities. I also touched on the delicate balance between advancing technology and addressing existing issues like infrastructure deficits and unemployment. My stance is clear: we must solve our current problems while also embracing AI to stay competitive on the global stage.
